The Fortified Village of Montemassi

Montemassi is an ancient fortified settlement, most likely dating back to the 10th century. The village has preserved its medieval layout to this day, with walls, towers, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Maremma countryside and the surrounding hills.
Over the centuries, Montemassi was contested by major Tuscan noble families. Until the mid-13th century it belonged to the Aldobrandeschi, then passed to the Pannocchieschi after a period marked by conflicts and usurpations by the Cappucciani of Sticciano. Its strategic position made it a key player in many historical events.

The Siege by Siena and Simone Martini’s Fresco

One of the best-known episodes in Montemassi’s history dates to 1398, when the village endured a long siege by the army of the Commune of Siena. The conquest was achieved through a complex military operation—one that entered history not only for its strategy, but also through art.
The event is immortalized in Simone Martini’s famous fresco, preserved in a hall of Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico, depicting the siege and capture of the Castle of Montemassi. This link between the village and one of the greatest masterpieces of medieval art makes the visit even more evocative.

From the Marquisate to the End of the Fiefdom

In 1632, the Marquisate of Montemassi and Roccatederighi was established and entrusted to the Malaspina family. The marquisate lasted until the end of the 18th century, when in 1789 the suppression of the fief began, marking the conclusion of Montemassi’s long feudal era.
Today, the village is an ideal destination for anyone who loves history, strolling through medieval towns, and the breathtaking views typical of the Colline Metallifere.
