The Village of Montemassi: History Close By
Agriturismo Capracotta is at the center of a vast area full of sites of historical and cultural significance. Just three kilometers away stands Montemassi, a fortified settlement likely dating back to the 10th century.
Until the mid-1200s, it was owned by the Aldobrandeschi. After almost a century of property transfers and usurpations, Montemassi endured a prolonged siege in 1398 by the army of the Republic of Siena, an event immortalized in an artwork by Simone Martini in Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico.
In 1632, the Marquessate of Montemassi and Roccatederighi was established under the Malaspina family. The feudal history of Montemassi ended in 1789, marking the suppression of the marquessate.
